I have been so obsessed with my new toy fresh from New York City that I've neglected to blog, eat, or sleep. My friend Alan (aka owner the domain JadedBitch.com) just returned from a trip to NYC. Before he left, I BEGGED him to bring me back something from my favorite camera store B&H Photo Video, which has only ONE store location (420 9th Avenue, NYC). This store is just a heaven for photographers because they carry literally everything from lightbulbs for slide projectors to chemical solutions for photo labs at home. I purchased my first SLR around 2yrs ago from them via mail order (Canon Rebel Ti). That's when I got serious about the art of photography and started taking classes. When I visited NYC last year, I swooped up 2 lenses and a few other gadgets. I've taken probably 1000+ images so far on that SLR using film. It has traveled to Mexico, USA, Taiwan, Italy, Germany, Holland, and Austria. Now I've decided to splurge on my first digital camera after resisting the technology and steep price for awhile. No, I'm not talking about cheapo pocket digital cameras that everyone carries these days. Those are great for party pics and self nudes, but I needed something more powerful. I got Alan to haul back a Canon Digital Rebel for me. This is a 6.3 megapixel digital SLR (i.e. you can switch lenses, control speed, aperture, ISO, etc). I bought the camera body plus a 1 Gigabyte memory card. The camera is also known as Canon EOS 300D in Europe. This digital beast cost me about $770 USD (about 600 Euros). Merry Christmas to myself! I've only taken about 35 images so far. It'll take me awhile to learn what all the buttons do and have a more accurate opinion about this machinery. I'm curious what the limitations are compared to a film SLR. Both my photography instructors have said digital cameras have yet to catch up with the high definition of film cameras (less possible color variations). My new toy is highly rated by many critics as a solid, superb digital SLR camera. I guess what I wonder is how come some digital SLRs cost twice the price of my new baby! A digital camera for around $1600 USD??? Can they do laundry and microwave popcorn or something?
